General Information

The City of Ames is seeking applicants for Drafting Assistant which will work in the Electric Services Department. Under the direction of the Utility Engineer, support and assist in the management of the City of Ames electric utilities CAD drawings. Maintenance of these files helps provide our utilities and the electric department with consistent and accurate drawings.

Examples of Essential Job Functions

  • Create and revise electrical, mechanical, civil, and structural drawings

  • Assist with maintenance of existing drawings

  • Data entry and analyses using Excel

  • Maintains MS Access data bases for drawing indices

  • Data collection in industrial and outdoor settings

  • Provide office assistance with filing and scanning

  • Fieldwork involving measuring and photos

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Required:

  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of AutoCAD

  • Be familiar with basic drafting related tasks

  • Coursework or experience using AutoCAD

Licenses and Certification: Valid Driver’s License

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge in drafting techniques, knowledge of basic excel functions.

Skill in proof reading and data entry.

Ability to learn new applications and technical tasks quickly, ability to read and interpret orthogonal drawings

Supplemental Information

Required Physical Activities: Talking, hearing, grasping, finger dexterity, climbing, walking and repetitive motions.

Physical Characteristics of Work: Primarily sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects. Occasionally lifting up to 30 pounds.

Vision Requirements: The minimum for use with those whose work deals largely with preparing and analyzing data and figures, the use of a computer terminal, and extensive reading.

Environmental Conditions: The worker is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. May have occasional exposure to environmental conditions common in industrial settings such as noise and elevated surfaces.

Equipment Used to Perform Essential Functions: Computer equipment such as keyboard, mouse, monitor, and printer. A variety of mechanical office equipment such as copy machine, light table and calculator. General office equipment such as writing utensils, paper fasteners, files, etc. Specialized tools and equipment for drafting and design such as a drafting board. Printed materials such as drawings, reference reports and correspondence. Tools for fieldwork such as a measuring tape and camera. Telephone.

Selection Process:

The selection process consists of an evaluation of education and experience, phone interview, hiring assessment, on-site interview which will include a manager meeting and written exercise and completion of a criminal background check, which includes a sex offender registry check. All candidates will be notified by email of their application status.

Preference may be given to applicants possessing qualifications above the minimum.

Depending on the number of qualified candidates, the City may forego phone interviews.
