Renewable Energy Group Director, Construction in Ames, Iowa


This position will safely and efficiently plan, direct and coordinate activities pertaining to the design, engineering, procurement, and construction of REG plants & property in accordance with company policies, goals and governmental regulations.This position willlead, direct, and/or assist in the continuous improvement of all processes & projects under their control in a manner that will optimize market share through product quality and customer service, minimize COG’s, improve efficiency, increase profitability, continuously promote and ensure safe working environments, prevent environmental incidents and achieve the mission and goals of the Company.



This position will have access to information that is confidential to the operations of the company. That information must be

  • Supervise, direct and coordinate activities of REG staff and external resources engaged in the efficient and effective management of REG construction projects and or operations while always complying with REG’s ESH policies and goals.

  • Deliver projects on time, on budget and meeting all performance requirements

  • Direct the development of annual operating business plans, to include business objectives, operating budgets, and capital budgets

  • Negotiate the most favorable terms realistically obtainable for the Company and minimize liabilities where possible with all third party agreements while actively collaborating and seeking guidance with the internal and external legal resources

  • Conduct periodic necessary staff/employee meetings

  • Provide for all policy, procedural, safety, employee, and other operating manuals, as required

  • Assure best practices are identified, communicated and promptly deployed

  • Actively contribute to the continuous evolvement of corporate philosophy, mission, and values

  • Develop and implement appropriate organizational structure to achieve business goals and develop direct reports for increased responsibilities

  • Participate in the acquisition, development, insurance, and maintenance of all physical assets

  • Assure that the projects under this positions control operate within all federal, state, and local laws and regulations

  • Demonstrate a positive personal and professional image in representing the Company in local, state, and national arenas

  • Maintain a positive attitude that promotes teamwork within the company and a favorable image in the community

  • Actively monitor performance and provide timely redirection of resources to ensure execution of plans and results meet or exceed expectations

  • Work closely with the VP Manufacturing and the designated

  • Project Managers/General Mangers for each individual plant

  • Responsible for the performance of all trade contractors and the review of engineering drawings to ensure all specifications and regulations are being followed

  • Review status report prepared by project personnel and modify schedules and/or plans as required to maintain construction time frame

  • Confer with project personnel to provide technical advice and to resolve problems in a professional manner

  • Act as or assist project managerwhen necessary

  • Coordinates with insurance carrier, fire protection, police department and other agencies having jurisdiction over property to ensure that property is complying with codes and regulations of each agency

  • Ensures that all required insurance certificates and statutory worker's compensation are in place prior to commencing work.

  • Consults with the project manager to review building budget and determine the scope of work required and to create a pricing schedule of proposed standard and upgrade options

  • Evaluates specifications for plan procedures, start and completion dates, and staffing requirements for each phase of the construction project

  • Interprets specifications and company policies to subordinates and/or contractors and enforces safety regulations.

  • Analyzes and resolves work problems, including worker complaints and grievances.

  • Inspects property under construction/upgrade on a regular basis to ensure the work conforms to specifications, budget and schedule and initiates any repair or replacement needs and/or adjustment of working procedures

  • Follow and continuously improve the Company’s capital approval and tracking processes

  • Actively monitor performance and provide timely redirection of resources to ensure execution of plans and results meet or exceed expectations.

  • Continuously improve communication of both the results and actions being taken to improve those results to the Company

  • Provide accurate, timely and complete business operating metrics and financial reports to the VP of Manufacturing or others as required

  • Actively contribute to the continuous evolvement of corporate philosophy, mission, and values

  • Participate on diligence teams to perform the requisite business and financial due diligence related to business development opportunities

Education Required:4 year bachelor’s degree or master’s degree (engineering related). MBA is preferred.

Experience Required:Supervisory construction experience, preferably in chemical or petroleum or processing environments on projects both small and greater than $200m. Excellent negotiation skills. 10 years executive business experience.

Skills Required:Proven high level decision-making, excellent oral and written communication, excellent computer skills, organizational, and leadership skills.

Ability to read and comprehend complex instructions, correspondence, memos, blue prints and floor plans.

Ability to write complex correspondence.

Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and large group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization.
