Job Description

The Bridges and Structures Bureau is seeking to hire a Transportation Engineer Specialist that will be an essential part of a Consultant Coordination team. This position requires an individual capable of applying engineering principles in the design and review of highway structures and transportation improvement projects of a broad scope and complexity. The individual selected will be performing complex professional engineering decisions that require an active Iowa professional engineering license. The engineering license is to be in place at the time of appointment and must be maintained to remain in this position.

Responsibilities of the position:

  • Review complex to highly complex, non-standard bridge final design plans prepared by consultants for the Bridges and Structures Bureau. Complex to highly complex bridges include multi-span prestressed beam or steel, tapered widths, unique repairs or rehabilitation projects. Reviews of this categorical complexity are expected for the majority of the time.

  • Provide day-to-day liaison with consultants who are requesting guidance or technical support on office policy and procedure for complex to highly complex bridge projects. This work includes unique, non-standard structures and materials. Represent the Bridges & Structures Bureau as project leader for consultants working on complex to highly complex, non-standard final design plans.

  • Follow-up project inquiries, construction errors, and consultant plan errors through the Office of Construction and Resident Construction Engineers. Coordinate with consultant as necessary.

  • Demonstrate commitment to continuous improvement of consultant prepared plans by taking an active role in working to enhance the "plan preparation checklist and commentary".

  • Perform special projects as assigned by the Consultant Coordinator.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Licensed as a professional engineer, and the equivalent of two years of full-time licensed professional transportation or related civil engineering experience. Must have, or prior to appointment, must obtain an active Iowa professional engineering license through the Iowa Professional Licensing Bureau – Engineering and Land Surveying Examination Board;

OR

a Masters degree in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, structural, or transportation engineering; engineering management; or an area closely related to transportation engineering may be substituted for one year of the required experience;

OR

employees withcurrentcontinuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to twelve months of full-time experience as a Transportation Engineer.
