Job Description
Are you a professional engineer looking to make a difference in Central Iowa’s transportation system? Look no further as the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) is looking to hire a Transpiration Engineer Specialist. We are looking for a passionate, detail orientated person who enjoys challenges and problem solving. We work in a collaborative team environment to deliver transportation projects for the Iowa DOT transportation system in District 1 which includes 12 counties in Central Iowa.

Location: District 1 Office in Ames, Iowa
Shift: 7:45 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, however hours may vary; flex scheduling is available; some occasional overnight travel required.
Pay Range: $73,569.60 to $113,152.00 a year
As a Transportation Engineer Specialist,your duties will include, but are not limited to:
This position serves as the lead designer for assigned projects, which entails coordinating work with design technicians, making sure that projects meet design standards, and the required permits and agreements are acquired.
Develops the scope/concept of transportation projects, schedules, cost estimates and budgets for transportation projects.
Develops and implementing asset management plans and priorities.
Works with district, central and consultant staff on bridge and structure priorities and projects.
Works with staff to design, develop and deliver transportation projects in areas that would include reconstruction, rehabilitation, resurfacing, maintenance, safety and emergency repair projects.
Serves a project manager and/or assistant project manager for projects.
Reviews plans, concepts and permit applications.
Coordinates transportation related projects with surrounding states, counties, cities and other government agencies.
Serves as a resource for other staff by providing engineering evaluation and recommendations.
Represents the DOT at public meetings, with other agencies and the public.
Engages in technical committees and work groups to improve department processes and policies.
License Requirements:
A valid Driver’s License must be possessed and maintained.
Licensure by the Engineering and Land Surveying Examining Board as a Professional Engineer. This licensure must be valid and in good standing at the time of hire and be maintained for employment.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
1) All of the following (a and b):
a. Licensure as a professional engineer; and
b. Two years of full-time professional work experience in transportation engineering or civil engineering.
2) All of the following (a, b, and c):
a. Licensure as a professional engineer; and
b. One year of full-time professional work experience in transportation engineering or civil engineering; and
c. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, structural, or transportation engineering; engineering management; or a field closely related to transportation engineering.
3) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes one year of full-time work as a Transportation Engineer.

Additional Qualification Requirements
Prior to appointment, applicants must possess active licensure as a professional engineer by the Iowa Engineering & Land Surveying Examining Board.
