Location:District 1 Office in Ames, Iowa

Shift:7:45 am to 4:30 pm, Monday-Friday, however hours may vary. Flex scheduling is available. This position occasionally requires some overnight travel.

*For non-state of Iowa employees, starting pay is negotiable within pay scale range, based on years of experience above the minimum qualifications.

Job Description:

We are looking for a passionate, detail orientated person who enjoys challenges and problem solving. We work in a collaborative team environment to deliver transportation projects for the Iowa DOT transportation system in District 1. District 1 covers 12 counties in central Iowa.

As part of our project development team you will be responsible for:

  • Developing the scope/concept of transportation projects.

  • Developing schedules, cost estimates and budgets for transportation projects.

  • Developing transportation project priorities.

  • Developing and implementing asset management plans and priorities.

  • Work with district, central and consultant staff on bridge and structure priorities and projects.

  • Work with staff to design, develop and deliver transportation projects. Typical work includes reconstruction, rehabilitation, resurfacing, maintenance, safety and emergency repair projects.

  • This position serves as the lead designer for assigned projects. This requires coordinating work with design technicians, making sure that projects meet design standards and the required permits and agreements are acquired.

  • Serving on project management teams for larger multidiscipline projects.

  • Being a project manager and/or assistant project manager for projects.

  • Reviewing plans, concepts and permit applications.

  • Coordinating transportation related projects with surrounding states, counties, cities and other government agencies.

  • Serve as a resource for other staff by providing engineering evaluation and recommendations.

  • Representing the DOT at public meetings, with other agencies and the public.

  • Involvement in technical committees and work groups to improve department processes and policies.

The person in this position must comprehend and interpret design standards and roadway plans; have a working knowledge and ability to use computer automated drafting/design software; be knowledgeable of highway design and construction; understand highway and bridge distress and repair techniques; have an understanding of highway drainage; understand traffic principals and construction zone safety; understand principals of highway safety; understand principals of highway signing and pavement marking; be able to develop cost estimates; use computer software and database programs; analyze problems with critical thinking and develop solutions; manage time to meet schedules and deadlines; manage resources and needs to develop work programs; effectively communicate with others (both verbally and in writing) and work proactively within a dynamic team.

The position is supervised by the District 1 Assistant District Engineer.

Licenses

  • A valid Driver’s License must be possessed and maintained

  • Licensure by the Engineering and Land Surveying Examining Board as a Professional Engineer. This licensure must be valid and in good standing at the time of hire and be maintained for employment.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

1) All of the following (a and b):

a. Licensure as a professional engineer; and

b. Two years of full-time professional work experience in transportation engineering or civil engineering.

2) All of the following (a, b, and c):

a. Licensure as a professional engineer; and

b. One year of full-time professional work experience in transportation engineering or civil engineering; and

c. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master’s degree in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, structural, or transportation engineering; engineering management; or a field closely related to transportation engineering.

3) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes one year of full-time work as a Transportation Engineer.

Additional Qualification Requirements

Prior to appointment, applicants must possess active licensure as a professional engineer by the Iowa Engineering & Land Surveying Examining Board.
