Position Summary
The Senior Controls Engineer successfully develops and executes capital projects by providing electrical power, controls, and networking engineering leadership and support which includes project scope, cost and schedule from concept through Qualification. The individual will develop and direct electrical controls strategies in support of overall business goals including medium to long-term controls, network architecture, and plant floor strategies to drive efficiency, plant floor productivity, and innovation. This position will functionally report to the VP, Engineering & Maintenance.
Position Responsibilities may include, but not limited to
Lead electrical and controls engineer on capital projects – Including overall project management of scope development, budget, system design, equipment sizing and selection, schedule, construction, installation, start-up, check-out, and closeout
Provides power and electrical controls systems and strategies to deliver efficiencies, innovation, and asset life cycle management
Lead the development of electrical and controls standards/specifications; maintain the standards and drive consistency through a Management of Change process
Link controls specifications to equipment & installation design, RFP and purchase
Builds subject matter expertise and technical capability in others
Evaluate and recommend new technologies
Drive technical solutions and provide guidance to electrical controls technicians responsible for maintaining plant electrical and controls systems
Partner with key stakeholders in Operations, Supply Chain and IT to deliver goals and strategies
Offers engineering support and troubleshooting assistance to the cross functional plant and company teams
Frequent interaction with top management of key controls and integrator vendors, engineering consultants, and installation contractors
Provide effective communication and documentation of work including technical plans, experimental reports, financial analysis, and management updates
Communicate status and issues regarding project activity on a continual basis
Provide innovative technical solutions required to meet business objectives with emphasis on productivity
Provide support to annual capital planning process, which may include development and management of the capital program for the facility
Develop and maintain strong relationships with existing and new vendors, suppliers, and contractors
Requirements
Required Skills & Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering/Technical/Scientific Discipline or equivalent experience
Minimum 5 years of relevant within a culture of continuous process improvement
Proficiency of electrical and controls systems with a focus on Allen-Bradley hardware and software
Experience designing/integrating and maintaining PLC networks, SCADA systems, ethernet IP communications, power distribution equipment including sizing transformers, electrical feeders, and distribution gear for equipment loads from 120V up to 4160V
Ability to utilize Continuous Improvement tools, including but not limited to Early Management, Specialized Maintenance, Autonomous Maintenance, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis, Induced Failure Testing, and support CI efforts
Knowledge and understanding of the primary codes and safety requirements applicable to controls safety systems, robotics, and power distribution equipment and systems
Proficiency in reading and interpreting P&ID, layout, equipment and fabrication drawings
Experience with CAD software for drawing creation and editing
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
Knowledge of utility (steam, water, air, NH3, etc.) controls design
Experience working with multi trade-based vendors/contractors
Experience leading large multi-discipline projects
Familiarity with Continuous Improvement tools and processes
Experience in plant operations and industrial environments understanding equipment design and impacts to materials, labor, and work processes
Ability to travel to, and work in, manufacturing facilities in North America including travel to vendor facilities, construction sites, system start-ups, etc.
Ability to travel to various sites as needed, up to 40-60%, depending on project and support priorities
Preferred Skills & Experience
10+ years of relevant engineering experience
Master’s Degree in Engineering or Technical/Scientific discipline
Experience in “Green Field” food plant construction projects
Engineering experience in the Food & Beverage Manufacturing Industry
Experience in USDA Dairy Sanitary Design Standards
Experience leading technical/engineering teams
Knowledge of 3A Design Standards
Experience with CAD software for drawing creation and editing
Physical Requirements
Repetitive motions that include the wrists, hands and/or fingers
Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting, remaining in a stationary position for prolonged periods
Visual perception to perform job including peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
