Instrumentation Engineer

The Instrumentation and Control staff at BSI Engineering has the knowledge and experience to provide clients with the superior services that are synonymous with our engineering group. Our BSI Instrumentation and Control staff have worked on hundreds of projects for companies and businesses across the United States. We meet with clients to determine the specific needs for their situation and then creates a plan to meet those needs and keep business running smoothly and efficiently. The Instrumentation team has field experience with retrofits, implementing PLC, DCS, and hybrid control systems, and even turnkey instrumentation and control projects.

The Instrumentation Engineer has comprehensive experience regarding control strategy development for various chemical processes along with a thorough understanding of various piping and mechanical process systems. Experience should include application and specification of various instrumentation, control devices, and modulating control valves.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and writes discipline specific proposals

  • Gathers field data and develops and supervises the use of design criteria document(s) to meet the project objectives

  • Ensures quality and technical accuracy of project deliverables

  • Follows the BSI Standard Operating Procedures and Client Standards

  • Mastered the application of all the necessary calculations and design effort to prepare deliverables

  • Ensures discipline's design is accurate and coordinated within the 2D drawings and/or 3D model and/or site scans

  • Delegates work and supervises Engineers and Designers on a project

  • Establishes and manages discipline?s engineering schedule and budget objectives on assigned projects

  • Estimates, plans and communicates staff requirements for assigned projects

  • Knowledgeable of the scope of the project with the ability to identify change orders and prepare the necessary paper work for approval

  • Provides clear direction to team of project scope, schedule, budget and expectations of quality

  • Ability to manage or self-perform capital cost estimating

  • Mastered the ability to supervise and write project-based documents; including but not limited to studies, project notes, scope, close-out reports

  • Familiar with client standards and how they apply to a given project

  • Give guidance and check the selection and specification of field instrumentation and control valves and control system hardware

  • Give guidance and check the mechanical and electrical installation details for instrumentation and controls including code specific requirements, hardware selection of bus technologies, and the cabling and wiring methods for instrumentation and control panels

  • Provide instrumentation input to P&IDs including control schemes

  • Participates in construction support, startup and commissioning efforts

  • Identifies individual training needs and goals, receives training from others and may attend outside seminars and mentors? others

  • Develops and carries out specific training sessions for others

  • As a primary point of contact for your discipline, interfaces with other design discipline counterparts and project management

  • Interfaces with client as primary point of contact for your discipline

  • Considers other disciplines and overall project requirements during the project lifecycle

  • Participates in interactive planning sessions to ensure scope, schedule, costs and quality are aligned to project objectives

  • Participates in multi-discipline squad checks of deliverables before issuance

  • Provides discipline specific technical advice

  • Identifies and communicates scope change for discipline

  • Continually monitors and communicates forecasted staffing requirements for their assigned projects

  • Strives to achieve the targeted billability goals for position

  • Executes assigned tasks to support business development; participates in sales presentations

  • Provides regular updates of individual marketing resume

  • Represents BSI at conferences or other outside functions in a professional manner

  • Provides direct, timely feedback to supervised team members and peers

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Engineering Degree or Equivalent

  • 10 years of industry experience

  • CAP P.E. desired, but not required

  • Proficient in AutoCAD

  • Proficient written and oral communication skills

  • Proficient presentation and decision-making skills

  • Ability to set priorities and manage multiple tasks

  • Strong leadership and conflict resolution skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Access Data Entry and Reporting

  • Possess a thorough understanding of the National Electrical Code and hazardous area classification requirements

  • Knowledgeable in PLC and DCS design and hardware is desired, but not required

  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and knowledgeable in Microsoft Project
