The advanced radio systems (ARS) department is responsible for tasks related to the research and development of advanced radio technologies for military markets.

This exciting position requires a background in FPGA design, including experience with verification. Successful applicants will collaborate in the development of new firmware designs and circuit card assemblies — carrying ideas from concept and planning through design, test, and release. Additionally, this position involves collaboration with program management, our talented multidisciplinary team, and internal/external customers.

The Senior Principal Firmware Engineer will work with a team of other engineers and technicians. The Senior Principal Firmware Engineer must collaborate with internal and external customers, peer engineers, finance, and leadership.

The Senior Principal Firmware Engineer does not have direct reports, but will direct work activities for supporting technicians, junior engineers, and project support staff. The Senior Principal Firmware Engineer will work collaboratively with component designers and other multi-disciplinary engineers. The Senior Principal Firmware Engineer is led by the Associate Director for RF Systems who is led by the Executive Director for Mission Systems Advanced Technology.

This position requires domestic travel up to 5% of the time. Work hours are typically Monday-Friday with very occasional weekends required. Work can take place in an office environment and microelectronics laboratory.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Design cutting edge firmware in FPGAs and ASICs for software defined radio for our military customers (includes updates and clean sheet designs)

  • Define requirements for new designs and develop requirements specification

  • Perform architectural design-including block diagram, trade off studies and design reviews

  • Perform detailed design-including implementation in VHDL, design analysis, and design reviews

  • Push the boundaries by introducing machine learning into FPGA processors

  • Support board level FPGA design & integration, including directing or performing PCB layout

  • Support firmware - software integration

  • Perform and direct FPGA design verification tasks

  • Participate in project retrospectives and assist in continuous process and workflow improvements

  • Participate in collaborative efforts to creatively solve problems in innovative ways

  • Create presentations explaining the approach and relevance to the design

  • Present technology concepts to customers/subcontractors in support of funding pursuits

  • Support external funding pursuits through proposal writing and/or customer meetings

  • Assist in the strategic technical planning including development of technology roadmaps and project concepts in alignment with business unit goals

  • Lead project teams (5-8 individuals)

  • Train and oversee efforts of less experienced designers; mentor and guide multiple teams

  • Estimate, plan, track, manage, and report status relating to technical, cost, schedule, design-to-cost and risk performance for assigned scope of work which may span across multiple disciplines or multiple design projects

  • Lead and monitor performance of assigned project tasks (including technical, cost, schedule, design to cost, product integrity and manufacturability)

  • Ensures successful overall performance of assigned project (including technical, cost, schedule, design to cost, product integrity and manufacturability)

  • Must be able to complete meaningful work in the absence of complete specifications and help create digital architectures for RF system requirements as a work in progress

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, and data-driven decision-making

  • Excellent verbal/written communication and teamwork skills

  • Experience in identifying, communicating, and mitigating risks

  • Knowledgeable of industry trends within his/her domain

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a creative, as well as practical problem-solving environment

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 10 years of prior relevant experience OR

  • Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 7 years experience OR

  • In absence of a degree, 14 years of relevant experience is required

  • Engineering/Other Technical Positions: Bachelor’s degree (typically in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM)) and a minimum of 10 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen

  • Must have or be capable of obtaining a US Department of Defense (DoD) security clearance. Candidate selected will be subject to a government security investigation/reinstatement and must meet eligibility requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to design, layout, and analyze using Digital FPGA tools such as Vivado, Embedded Development Suite, or others

  • Ability to use timing diagrams for design and verification

  • Ability to create and use synchronous and asynchronous state machines

  • Familiarity with Xilinx and Intel Altera architectures/components

  • Experience with test plans

  • Demonstrates technical knowledge/expertise in multiple technologies

  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot problems while integrating components or subassemblies

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience translating VHDL or Verilog into ASICs

  • Advanced degree is desired

  • Waveform FPGA implementation

  • Experience in FPGA/SW integration on multiprocessor system-on-chip (MPSoC) and/or radio frequency system-on-chip (RFSoC)

  • Strong interest in machine learning

  • Experience in Tensor Flow, Python

  • Process Control – Requirements capture

  • Experience integrating digital components with RF components/assemblies including filters, low-noise amplifiers, mixers, power amplifiers, power regulators/converters, switches, frequency synthesizers

  • Demonstrated ability to implement high speed Ethernet 10/40/100 Gbps

  • Bid & proposal resulting in successful capture of funding

  • Experience with environmental effects testing
