WABTEC Systems Safety Engineer in Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Overview

At Wabtec Railway Electronics our System Safety Engineers need to understand, guide, and document the demonstration of safety for newly developed Positive Train Control systems to both internal and external customers. The applicant will be responsible for compiling a portion/all components required for certification as defined by CFR 49 Part 236 Subpart I and Appendix C. As part of this process, hazard identification, detailed fault trees, occasional FMEAs and risk assessments will be required. All failure rate data needs to be established and justified. Adherence to a formal process will be required, although continuous process improvements are encouraged.

Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Analyze and document systems under development for hazardous condition and provide meaningful solutions to development team

  • Understand architecture requirements for high integrity computing solutions

  • Conduct Hazard Analysis

  • Develop system level failure and fall back documents for external customers

  • Build fault trees that reflect the identified hazards an mitigating in an accurate manner

  • Perform component level FMEAs (Falilure Modes and Effect Analysis) as necessary

  • Serve as mentor to team members on methodologies

  • Guide development team toward product certification under CFR 49 Part 236 Subpart I and Appendix C

  • Interface with external customers and regulatory agencies

Qualifications

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • BSEE/BSCS/BSCE and minimum 5 years system safety engineering experience

  • An understanding of System Safety Engineering concepts (e.g., ARP4761 and DO178B)

  • Familiarity with CAFTA, FTAs, and FMEA's

Required Skills:

  • Attention to detail; approaches work in a meticulous and thorough manner

  • Makes effective decisions by analyzing information and considering priorities

  • Good oral and written communication skills

  • Self motivated, results oriented with a clear focus on quality

  • 10-20% travel requirement

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Railroad experience
