Job Description

The Iowa Department of Transportation is looking to fill a Engineering Technician Senior position to assist the state.

This position is for an Engineering Technician Senior which reports directly to the Assistant District Engineer (ADE) in the District 4 Office. District 4 includes a 17 county area in southwest Iowa. Responsibilities include development, from concept to project plan turn in to the Office of Contracts, of 3R and MP project plans and proposals.

A strong background in roadway design is desirable, including an excellent working knowledge of Microstation CADD and Geopak design computer software. Ability to coordinate with and review county and city projects to ensure all state and federal guidelines and procedures are met. In conjunction with the ADE and district area engineering and operations personnel, review roadway conditions in order to develop rehabilitation strategies.

This person must also understand survey principals and applications, construction specifications, standards, policies and instructional memorandum; must be able to effectively communicate with DOT staff, local government agencies, FHWA, property owners, consultants and the general public. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

Shift: 7:45 - 4:30 M-F

Travel: Some overnight travel may be expected

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate's Degree in Civil Engineering or related field and experience equal to five years of full-time work in engineering survey, construction inspection, materials inspection or materials testing;


any equivalent combination of education and experience substituting qualifying experience for the education on the basis of one year of experience for thirty semester hours of education;


employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes the experience equal to one year of full-time work as a Construction Technician Senior or four years of full-time work as a Construction Technician.
