Meta Data Center Facility Operations Retrofits Project Engineer in Des Moines, Iowa


Our Data Centers serve as the foundation upon which our software operates to meet the demands of our customers. The Global Facilities Operations Support (GFOS) Retrofits team is a global HQ based team that supports our data centers by managing design and development of both global programmatic and site-specific retrofits (brownfield projects). The ideal candidate for this role will have an electrical or mechanical engineering background and is experienced in the design, commissioning, and operation of critical Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) and Control System infrastructure. The ideal candidate will have experience with brownfield (Retrofit) multidisciplinary projects in an operational critical facilities environment, both in a project discipline engineering capacity and project management capacity.

Data Center Facility Operations Retrofits Project Engineer Responsibilities:

  1. Support Retrofit Program Managers (RPMs) with global retrofit program design management activities.

  2. Determine technical deliverables based on project scope for each engineering discipline impacted: Engineering studies and field verifications: power system studies, TAB reports, Computational Flow Dynamic (CFD) modelling, head load analysis etc. Drawings: Single Lines/Three Line Diagrams, P&IDs, RCPs, Panel Schedules, Piping Isometrics, Power Plans.

  3. Review design packages and technical deliverables developed by Engineering of Record for completeness, fitness for service and completeness.

  4. Review and approve critical submittals in collaboration with Engineers of Record and project lead discipline engineers.

  5. Collaborate with Operations Integration, Field Operations and 3rd party Cx agents to shape the initial draft and review the final commissioning plans, including all associated technical documentation: Load bank plans, Commissioning Scripts etc.

  6. Development of RFQs/RFPs for design activities (Follow FB RFP template, Specifications list, Deliverables lists, Coordinate Review with Consultants/Answer RFIs).

  7. Coordination with data centers for obtaining relevant as-built documentation (drawings/submittals).

  8. Initiate the purchase order workflow for design consultants after award.

  9. Coordination of Design package development and reviews (Organize meetings, Tracking Comments and Adjudication, Tracking RFIs, Site specific CD design reviews – chair (help lighten load from RPM in execution), expediting resolution with Engineer of Record).

  10. Organization and chairing of regular program update meetings.

  11. Take part in field walks/visits during detail design and construction design to validate site conditions and coordinate Engineer of Record job walks.

  12. Provide input to schedulers for program design updates.

  13. Manage single disciplinary or lower complexity projects and programs with little to no oversight from an RPM.

  14. Electrical and/or mechanical equipment setting modifications at scale across Meta's operational data center fleet: Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs, smart relays on electrical switchgear).

  15. Upgrades/modifications to OEM equipment: addition of specialized metering equipment, condition-based monitoring sensors, safety upgrades such as arc flash exhaust plenums etc.

  16. Sequence of Operation (SOO) updates to our mechanical and electrical systems, with limited to no hardware modifications (limited to a few end device additions, such as sensors, actuated valves, and flowmeters for example.

  17. Support RPMs with design activities required as part of the Facebook data center end of life and obsolescence programs, Managing development of simple design packages for parts replacement (minor piping modification details for valve replacement for example).

  18. Ability to travel domestically and internationally as needed (25%).

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. B.A./B.S. degree in a technical/engineering discipline (mechanical, electrical or equivalent)

  2. 3+ years experience as a Discipline Project Engineer/Project Manager for multidisciplinary retrofit project designs

  3. 8+ years experience working in a critical industry in an engineering function

  4. Stakeholder management experience - including managing multiple cross-functional partners simultaneously

  5. Track record managing projects throughout their lifecycle in an owner/operator capacity: front end development, design management, business case development, execution planning and construction administration)

  6. Experience developing retrofit project designs for industrial critical facility environment (Data Center, Nuclear, Pharmaceutical, Chemicals, Oil & Gas, Etc.)

  7. Familiar with specifications, design and commissioning of MEP and Control systems used in critical facility applications: electrical switchgear, electrical SCADA systems, Smart Relays, Air Handling Units (CRAHs, AHUs, RTUs), Chiller Plants, Pumps, Heat Exchangers, building management systems (DDC, PLC systems)

  8. Knowledge of industry standards, building codes and safety standards

  9. Familiar with AutoCAD and/or Revit (in the context of design reviews)

  1. Experience being part of an owner/operator project delivery organizations or experience supporting owner/operator retrofit portfolios as an owner’s representative

  2. Experienced with front end engineering and design activities: project definition, option analysis, option selection based on project specific value drivers

  3. Strong technical background, proven track record within an engineering discipline along with project manager/project engineer function

  4. PMP or other relevant qualification

  5. Experienced with Bluebeam Revu, BIM 360 Docs, and Procore
