MidAmerican Energy Company Engineer I,II or Sr Engineer-Electric Standards in Des Moines, Iowa

This is a multi-level posting. Candidates may be considered for any of the posted levels, depending on their level of experience and depth of expertise. Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Job Function) The engineer-electric standards provides leadership and engineering services for the development and/or maintenance of MidAmerican's electric substation, transmission and distribution standards while ensuring conformance to applicable, state, federal, and industry regulations and codes. Project assignments may also include investigating material failures, evaluating electric materials and manufacturing facilities, and performing technical bid evaluations. Typical Duties Provide engineering services to develop and revise electric material specifications as well as electric substation, transmission, and distribution construction standards. Evaluate product specifications, perform manufacturing inspections and approvals. Coordinate revisions with vendors, engineering, operations, procurement and stores groups. Perform technical bid evaluations. Review and approve purchase requests. Provide technical assistance to the engineering and operations groups. (40%) Provide technical assistance for the electric distribution construction standards committee. Provide technical subject matter expertise, develop material presentations and evaluations, provide recommendations and participate in committee discussions for material and construction standards related topics. (15%) Communicate electric material and construction standards information/education throughout the company. Interpret National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) requirements using advanced knowledge of the NESC, and apply to required construction standards. The NESC sets the ground rules for practical safeguarding of persons during the installation, operation, or maintenance of electric supply and communication lines and associated equipment. (15%) Investigate electric material failures and coordinate technical evaluations as required. Work with material manufacturers on corrective actions and/or recommend enhancements to material designs. (10%) Assist with electric construction standards field inspections for adherence to standards across the territory and compose audit reports for electric service areas. Present findings to field employees, supervisors, and managers. Identify items to improve construction and engineering compliance. (10%) Participate in committees involved with electric standards such as Midwest Electrical Distribution Exchange, Midwest Energy Association, Engineering Roundtable Committee, Electric Service Manual Committee, Design Standards Committee, Transformer Committee, and the Avian Power Line Interaction Committee. (5%) Support planning, design and service standards. (5%) Perform additional responsibilities as requested or assigned. Demonstration of knowledge and understanding of human performance improvement techniques. Evaluate present practices and implement processes, concepts, training and tools to prevent, detect and correct human errors that may adversely impact the safe, reliable operation of the electric transmission and distribution system. Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited institution. One to three years of engineering experience is required for the engineer II level. Five years of engineering experience is required for the senior engineer level. PE License preferred. High level of technical knowledge, judgment and capability in the engineering discipline. Effective communicator with technical and managerial personnel within and external to MidAmerican Energy Company. Working knowledge of applicable federal, state, local laws, and regulations including the National Electric Safety Code (NESC). Effective verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to meet deadlines while maintaining a high level of accuracy. Effective analytical and problem-solving skills. Project management skills, ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks concurrently. Proficient with the use of personal computers.
