Job Title: Material Handler

Job Description

As a Material Handler, you will be responsible for pulling customer orders based on invoices and tickets, assisting the burn table operator, and reorganizing materials. This role involves physically demanding tasks such as bending, kneeling, and walking throughout the day to move products. You will also operate large cranes to move steel orders and assist customers with their orders. Daily tasks are detail-oriented and require prioritizing order pulling and customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Pull customer orders based on invoices and tickets.

  • Assist the burn table operator in pulling product for orders.

  • Bend, kneel, and walk throughout the day to move products.

  • Operate large cranes to move steel orders.

  • Reorganize materials in 'monkey racks' to ensure proper stock arrangement.

  • Load and unload trucks.

  • Assist customers with their orders when they pick up products.

  • Utilize the company's color system to organize raw materials based on the thickness of steel cuts.

  • Communicate with management about order statuses and material availability.

  • Prioritize tasks to ensure timely and accurate order pulling and customer service.

Essential Skills

  • Experience in warehouse, picking, and material handling.

  • Proficiency in loading and general labor tasks.

  • Ability to use a tape measure accurately.

  • Experience operating overhead cranes and forklifts.

  • Machine operation skills.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Ability to use micrometers and calipers.

  • Valid driver's license.

  • Ability to distinguish all colors.

  • Capability to lift up to 50 lbs.

  • 1+ years of labor-intensive work experience (e.g., carpentry, construction, mechanical).

  • 2+ years of longevity in previous positions.

  • Military, building maintenance, or experience with product variations and measurements is preferred.

Work Environment

The work environment is loud and dirty due to the nature of the product. You will work in a large warehouse with stacks of steel and racks holding materials. The facility uses overhead cranes to move heavy steel products. It can be hot in the summers and cold in the winters. The team consists of 15-20 members, depending on the time of year, and operates without seasonal layoffs. You must wear jeans, steel-toed boots, and work-appropriate attire for safety reasons. The shift is from 7 am to 4 pm.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Des Moines, Iowa.
