We are looking for a highly creative and motivated engineer with Iowa DOT and/or local municipal bridge design experience. While the primary focus will be on local and statewide bridge projects, the candidate will have the opportunity to support other disciplines and projects through our firmwide bridge practice. Responsible for the production and modification of design calculations, technical reports, engineering plans and specifications for assigned projects. This position consults with the project manager to perform research, development, calculations, design and delivery. Applies engineering techniques, procedures and design criteria for projects ranging in size and complexity. Leverages technical knowledge and experience to address design related issues or concerns, working closely with the project manager through creative problem solving, interactions with clients and by completing tasks to meet the project schedule. Develops conceptual and detailed designs and calculations to support the project completion using current drawing and technical tools, programs and software. May mentor, train and review work of junior engineer staff and provide constructive feedback. As a member of the team, you will contribute to the successful project delivery for a diverse range of projects for HNTB’s clients
Primary Focus Will Include:
Completing the structural analysis and design of structural elements or leading a team to complete analysis or design of structural elements within the agreed to schedule and to the requirements of the scope of services and industry standards
Complete quality control reviews of other engineers' work in accordance with the project specific quality management plan.
Attend client meetings and coordinate directly with the client to complete tasks
Coordinate staffing of their task with staffing needs of other projects
Develop project design criteria, design calculations, construction details, quantities and cost estimates
Responsible for cost control on projects and quality control within bridge discipline
Resolve problems, interpret engineering specifications, investigate design and field engineering difficulties and coordinate schedules
Provide technical guidance and mentoring of project team members, including other engineers and technical support staff (CADD techs)
Lead a small team of engineers in the execution of project design and production on both small and large projects
Prepare and check design drawings and/or specifications
Review and check engineering work completed by others
Oversee planning, design and construction phases of projects
Serve as technical liaison with client on project efforts
Market to clients in pursuit of additional project
Preferred Qualifications and Skills:
Master's degree in Structural Engineering
PE (Iowa or ability to obtain via reciprocity)
Experience on IADOT projects or in the State of Iowa
What You'll Need
Responsible for the planning and distribution of discipline-specific work, and adherence the to the schedule and budget on projects.
Assists in marketing responsibilities, including proposal generation.
Assists with the development of scope of work and level of effort for projects and/or assignments within discipline.
Oversees completeness and accuracy of project team’s work within the technical discipline. Guides and mentors team to overall project objectives.
Coordinates technical aspects of project with client counterpart and teaming partners at staff level for work within the discipline.
Works closely with other disciplines on multi-discipline projects.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and 6 years of relevant experience
Master’s degree in Engineering and 5 years of relevant experience
PhD in Engineering and 4 years of relevant experience
