Job Description

Mount Pleasant Correctional Facilities’ mission is Helping People Become Their Best. To accomplish our Mission, the person selected for this position shall be able to demonstrate emotional intelligence, leadership, adaptability and empathy while working with employees, incarcerated individuals and the public.

MPCF is looking to hire a full-time Correctional Trades Leader with carpentry and masonry experience. This position will be responsible for repairs to campus buildings as well as some new construction while training a crew of I/I workers.

Typical responsibilities of a CTL Carpenter:

  • Read and interpret blueprints/schematics

  • Perform journeymen level repairs in carpentry and masonry

  • Research needed parts as well as keep an accurate inventory on hand

  • Perform tuck pointing repairs to existing buildings

  • Perform roof repairs as needed

  • Use ladders, lifts, and power equipment in a safe manner

  • Maintain a neat and sanitary work environment

  • Supervise/train incarcerated individuals while work is being performed

  • Demonstrates proficient carpentry/masonry skills

  • Possess a keen attention to detail and ability to effectively manage time

  • Highly organized and responds well in a fast paced environment

  • Effective communication skills; both written and verbal with a variety of individuals

Selectives

060 Building Trades (Masonry, Carpentry)

6 months’ experience, 12 semester hours, or a combination of both in masonry/carpentry.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  • Four years of full-time work experience in one or more of the recognized building (e.g., carpentry, painting, plumbing/pipefitting, electrical and masonry) and mechanical/repair (e.g., air conditioning/ heating, auto mechanics, upholstery and welding) trades.

  • A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university coursework in a recognized building and mechanical trade for each year of the required experience.

  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes one year of full-time work as a Furniture Upholsterer, Mason, Maintenance Repairer, Carpenter 1 or 2, Painter 1 or 2, Plumber 1 or 2, or Welder.

Additional Qualification Requirements

Within a period of time, as determined by the appointing authority, persons in this class may be required to obtain a license to perform electrical work in accordance with Chapter 103, Iowa Code

Designated positions in this job class require applicants to obtain the required commercial driver's license and endorsements within a period of time as determined by the appointing authority at the time of hire.
