Now accepting applications for an Water Resources Engineer (EI) who will specialize in our Agricultural Drainage projects to join our Spencer office. This is a new position to join an experienced, established staff of professionals to serve our Northern Iowa Market.

As a Design Engineer I (EI) you will learn practical on-the-job experience serving our Northern Iowa market. As a Design Engineer I you will spend the majority of the time assisting project managers and project engineers in design and construction phase activities on drainage district and wetland restoration projects. This applicant must possess a high capacity for self-motivation and be able to apply engineering and environmental knowledge to a variety of projects. In addition, must be able to develop and maintain strong relationships with clients and staff from various agencies. We would love to have an Engineer-in-Training join our team who is passionate for farming.

This position is open to May 2017 college graduates.

Primary Duties:

  • perform basic design computations

  • preliminary layout and design

  • research and prepare rough drafts of preliminary reports and feasibility studies

  • assist with project design and preparation of plans and specifications

  • prepare cost and quantity take-off estimates

  • perform detailed inspection and project documentation

  • Construction observation activities may include performing construction staking, performing construction administration duties such as documenting activities, measuring and testing, providing general oversight, and interacting with contractors, sub-contractors, residents and client staff


  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Agricultural or Civil Engineering from an accredited post-secondary institution with an emphasis in, or elective courses in, water resources is required

  • Successfully passed or within six months of employment pass, the Fundamentals of Engineering (Engineer Intern) exam

  • Ability to work in extended outdoor conditions, and you must be physically capable of navigating rugged terrain for the purpose of performing the construction observation duties outlined above.

  • Academic or practical experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D

  • Basic MS Office skills including Word and Excel

  • Possess a valid driver’s license and their own transportation. You will be reimbursed for business-related travel.

  • Ability to actively listen to others for understanding of their needs and situations; ability to read, speak and write English clearly is required. This position interacts with client staff, residents, contractors and sub-contractors.

Preferred skills:

  • 1-2 years of engineering experience working with engineers and/or in related field. College internships may count towards years of experience.

  • Experience working in AutoCAD Civil 3D and MS Office Word & Excel. Basic knowledge of GIS Arcview a plus

  • Agricultural drainage, rural hydrology and/or wetland restoration exposure and knowledge
