Musco Lighting Senior Electrical Engineer (Hardware) in Urbandale, Iowa


The Senior Electrical Engineer will be involved in all aspects of hardware development for a variety of lighting-related communication and control products, including concept development; basic research and testing; hardware design, development, and testing, including generation of detailed design and test documentation; and product and system-level verification and validation, including oversight of field trials and associated data analysis. The ideal candidate will be a self-motivated team player, with a willingness to learn and displaying creative problem-solving skills.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in developing and writing specifications for new products and systems.

  • Independently perform hardware development for advanced product designs:

  • Create all circuit designs required for a complete board assembly.

  • Test circuit designs by conducting experiments and operating lab equipment.

  • Select all components needed for the design within design policy constraints.

  • Perform root cause analysis of circuits failures.

  • Document designs through the creation of schematic diagrams and BOMs.

  • Conduct design reviews with peers, Test Engineering, Musco Manufacturing, and others to ensure designs meet targets for functionality, reliability, and manufacturability.

  • Perform board layouts or work with outside vendors on layouts.

  • Construct prototype boards when appropriate. Work with Purchasing to have prototype boards built when appropriate.

  • Develop and execute functional test plans. Work with technicians and junior engineers to execute and document tests when appropriate.

  • Work with software/firmware developers as needed to complete overall product development.

  • Lead efforts to install and test products at Beta sites, working with other departments as necessary. May require travel to sites.

  • Help ensure products meet regulating agency approvals and requirements.

  • Assist with the mechanical design where appropriate.

  • Work with other groups to release product documents (schematic diagrams, gerber files, and BOMs) to Vantage.

  • Assist in selecting new component families (e.g. microcontrollers), communication methods and protocols, hardware interfaces, and so on.

  • Assist in developing design methodologies, choosing development tools, and so on.

  • Mentor less experienced engineers in technical topics and development best practices.

  • Participate in product design reviews, recommend design changes, recommend test strategies, and provide technical support and direction as needed.

  • Develop product cost estimates.

  • Interface with other departments to bring the product, or product changes, into production on schedule.

  • Support application engineers and project managers with product issues as needed.

  • Support Warranty, Field Service, and Manufacturing departments with product issues as needed.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or equivalent.

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in an R&D role performing PCB development, testing, and support.

  • Experience with drawing systems, change notice systems, and multi-level BOMs is required, as is the ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings.

  • Experience with control systems is strongly preferred.

  • Experience with single-phase and three-phase power systems is preferred.

Job Specifications:

  • Demonstrated PC proficiency in Microsoft Office.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of electrical engineering principles, concepts, practices, and theories.

  • Must be proficient with common test and measurement equipment such as oscilloscopes, signal generators, and multi-meters.

  • Ability to design and troubleshoot complex analog and digital electronic hardware and systems.

  • Ability to build prototypes and test fixtures, including soldering through-hole and surface-mount components.

  • Ability to write basic firmware needed to test microprocessor-based hardware prototypes.

  • Basic knowledge of electronic manufacturing.

  • A basic understanding of software/firmware concepts and development activities.

  • A basic understanding of mechanical design as related to the packaging of electronic assemblies.

Other Special Requirements:

  • Up to 5% travel may be required. Travel includes trips to job sites, seminars, corporate and manufacturing facilities, and vendors.

  • Overtime is required as needed including weekends.
