Title: Electric Drive Systems Engineer - 40980

Your Responsibilities

As an Electric Drive Systems Engineer, you will plan, coordinate, and carry out the product analysis, design, and/or testing activities for electric drive components and systems used on vehicles worldwide. Electric drive system components include motors, generators, power inverters, safety protection devices, control systems, conductors, and connectors. This engineer works with the platform product engineers to define and develop the engineering requirements for electric drive systems for production focused product development programs. In addition, you will:

  • Perform analysis and design in the electric drive system design consisting of electric machines, power electronics, control systems, and related systems. Makes recommendations to optimize system performance, while meeting the application requirements. Resolves complex technical issues utilizing contributions from a team environment.

  • Collaborate with vehicle engineering groups to translate customer needs and vehicle requirements into electric drive system and component requirements for production programs to meet product requirements (performance, cost, quality and schedule), diagnostic needs, environmental requirements and applicable industry standards.

  • Support formal product development processes in conjunction with vehicle platform engineering. Duties include managing work flow, supporting documentation creation and common practices such as FMEAs, design reviews, change management, product validation, product verification, and diagnostic development.

  • Lead problem resolution with technology in vehicle applications. Works closely with vehicle engineers to understand, define and correct technical problems.

  • Support technology development in a manner to support robust transition to production programs and leverage existing components, suppliers, and technology base.

  • Leverage knowledge of vehicle engineersTech Center India (TCI), consultants and suppliers for system analysis, design, and development. This will include interfacing with other analysis functions, such as: heat transfer modeling, dynamic modeling, noise and vibration analysis, finite element analysis, etc.

  • Keep current on electric drive technology advancements and emerging applications. Learn new and improved techniques from seminars, colleagues, technical papers, etc.

What Skills You Need

  • 2 or more years of Product Engineering experience (Graduate school research is valid)

  • 2 or more years of Product Design experience (Graduate school research is valid)

  • Work experience relating to the design or testing of components, such as: electric machines, power electronics, connectors and conductors (Graduate school research is valid)

  • Work experience relating to the design or testing of electric drive systems consisting of electric machines, power electronics, and control software (Graduate school research is valid)

  • Experience with simulation/modeling tools, such as MATLAB/Simulink

  • Experience with lab equipment such as dynamometers, high speed data capture, current sensors and other tools for design and debug of electric drives components

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal. Written communication requirements include generating product/system requirements documents of significant magnitude, creating technical reports suitable for long-term archiving, and creating presentations. Verbal communication requirements include making presentations and participating in meetings

What Makes You Stand Out

  • Ability to constructively work with suppliers in the application and design of electric drive systems and electric drive components

  • Ability to contribute to system concept development and modeling application

  • Knowledge of mechanical drives that interface with electric motors and generators

  • Knowledge of power electronic inverter construction and cooling

  • Knowledge of different electric machine types and forms

  • Lab experience in electric drive testing including power electronics and electric machines

  • Advanced technical degrees are desired

Education (or equivalent work experience)

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering with supporting studies in electric drive control, electric machine components and/or power electronics
